Sports Performers

For individuals who are in Primary 7 and older who are committed to their athletic development the Movement Evolution Performance Sports Performers programme will help them fulfill their athletic potential.  As they begin to specialise and invest time and effort into specific sports the Sports Performers programme aims to complement their training in their specific sport(s) aiming to develop better athletes resulting in better sporting results but also to prevent injury.  Developing skills that will benefit them in their sporting and non-sporting lives as they grow.

These sessions are 75 minutes long and will aim to develop strength, speed, power and overall athletic competence.  We aim to be athlete centered delivering activity appropriate for the mental and physical maturation of the individual, and where required we will work on specific skills with smaller groups.  The sessions build on from the fundamental movements learned in Tough Monkees sessions with a focus on learning key weight lifting techniques as well as developing speed and general conditioning, as competence and confidence improves so will the variety of different pieces of equipment used including Olympic bars.

Getting Started
Aberdein Core Activation.jpg

All new Sports Performers, regardless of age or sporting ability, will begin by attending two FREE 1 to 1 "Let's Get Started"  45 minute sessions with one of our coaches.

The first of these sessions will be a chat which will help to give us a better understanding of the athletes needs, including the needs of their sport,  their schedule and their aspirations.

The second session will be a 1 to 1 session, where an initial assessment of movement competencies and stage of physical maturation will take place.

From there an individual will be able to book into our Sports Performers sessions and begin working on the Sports Performers Development Programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

How good does my child have to be at their chosen sport(s)?

It doesn't matter how good your child is or isn't at their chosen sport(s) but instead how good they want to be.  Our Sports Performer Sessions are designed for youngsters who want to excel by listening, working hard and applying themselves.

Will my child be lifting weights?

Yes, though this will vary in nature depending on the session and the capabilities of the individual.  It may vary from light weight sandbells, or powerbags, to kettlebells and bar bells. Focus is always on teaching and maintaining good form, and participants will never be pushed beyond their own capabilities.

Isn't that bad for children when they are young?

Despite many peoples thoughts that resistance training is unsafe or inappropriate for youth, there is now a compelling body of scientific evidence that supports its use by children and adolescents for a wide range of performance, health, and injury reducing benefits. Research has indicated that various forms of resistance training can elicit significant performance improvements in muscular strength, power production, running velocity, change of direction speed, and general motor performance, in youth. From a health perspective, evidence suggests that resistance training can make positive alterations in overall body composition, reduce abdominal and trunk fat, improve insulin-sensitivity in overweight adolescents, and enhance cardiac function in obese children. Importantly, it has also been suggested that regular participation in an appropriately designed exercise programme, which includes resistance training, can enhance bone mineral density and reduce sports-related injury risk in young athletes.

How big are the small group strength and conditioning sessions?

The coach to athlete ratio will never be more than 1:8 in a strength and conditioning session.

When are the group strength and conditioning sessions?

Our current timetable for all of our activities can be found below.

All Sports Performers activities are highlighted in light blue for easy recognition.

Will sessions continue through the school holidays?

Sessions will run for 48 weeks of the year so for the majority of the school holidays sessions sessions will continue to run though there may be alternations to the timetable during school holidays

What if I can't make my session?

Through the Individual Champions & Challengers Chats we aim to identify times of the year where attendance may be difficult due to sporting or educational commitments and will be flexible to the athletes needs. If there are spaces in alternative classes during the calendar month athletes can make up sessions in these.

I really want to book my child in but I just can't afford it?

The Movement Evolution Sports Performer Bursary scheme aims to support those that cannot afford to attend Sports Performers sessions but would benefit.
